Dear Parent or Carer,

School Categorisation

If you follow us on Twitter or have been watching the Welsh news you will know that the Welsh Government has published its school’s categorisation for 2016-17. Schools are categorised either red, amber, yellow or green depending on the amount of support and challenge they require to improve their performance for all learners, taking into consideration how effectively they are led and managed and the quality of teaching and learning.

I am thrilled to tell you that Deri View has been categorised as being ‘Green’; a highly effective school with a track record of sustaining a high level of learner outcomes; demonstrating resilience at all levels and being challenged to move towards or sustaining excellence.

The staff and governors at the school would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in helping us to achieve this, the highest level of categorisation for our school but most importantly for our children. You can read more about categorisation at

You can come and see our excellent work for yourselves at our Open Morning on Friday March 3rd 9:00am – 11:00am.

The Winning Class is Miss Cooper’s Class!

We aim for every class to get 100% attendance each week. Anything over 95% is good. Last term we managed to achieve our attendance target of 95%. Looking at last week’s attendance unless we all work hard to make big improvements we will not reach our 95% targets in the spring term.

Staff Changes

We have been required to make and plan for a number of changes to staffing across the school. These changes affect three classes and the decisions have been taken in order to ensure all learners are able to access sustained high quality teaching and learning for the remainder of this academic year.

Mr Kane will continue to teach Year 6 (formally Mrs Thomas’ class), for the remainder of this academic year. Mrs Thomas will work alongside Miss Barry in Reception until Mrs Williams commences her maternity leave, at the end of March. Miss Barry will then move to Year 2 to cover this maternity absence and Mrs Thomas will be Receptions’ class teacher. Mrs Thomas has had extensive experience, (6 years) as a Reception teacher in her previous school.

Internet Safety Day

Next Tuesday is internet safety day. This is the perfect time for all parents to review their child’s online safety. At Deri View we teach the SMART rules (Safe, Meeting, Accepting, Reliable, Tell.)

You can find out more about these at our open morning or on-line at
